Your Base Camp in the Dolomites
The Rifugio A. Fronza alle Coronelle (Kölner Hütte) refuge in the Dolomites lies at an elevation of 2,337 metres. It is easily accessible via cable car from the Frommeralm alpine farm, and is an ideal starting point for climbing and hiking. The following attractions are located near the Rifugio A. Fronza alle Coronelle:
The five kilometre long, extremely beautiful, and much visited Hirzelweg Trail leads to the Christomannos Monument, a bronze eagle in honour of Theodore Christomannos. His life’s work was the development of the famous Dolomite Road. From Rifugio A. Fronza alle Coronelle, follow trail markings (No. 549) down the light grade of a scree cirque then under the rocky precipices of Cima Sforcella (Tscheiner) Peak, basically flat, to a crossroads. From there, either turn right on the heavily used Trail No. 552, which is sometimes also marked the lower Hirzelweg (unterer Hirzelweg), to the Rifugio Paolina (Paolinahütte) mountain refuge or turn left on the actual Hirzelweg Trail, which is less travelled, briefly uphill through two switchbacks with a slight grade (still marked No. 549). Then just below the mighty Rotwand and under Punta Masaré, you’ll go first over scree and later across grassy slopes, basically flat, and along the trail that comes from Rifugio Paolina. Follow this trail for a bit, and you’ll find yourself at the Christomannos Monument (2,349 m).

Behind the Rifugio A. Fronza alle Coronelle mountain refuge, there are trail traces (M 550 and 542) that lead in about 15 minutes over a ridge (this portion is secured by a wire cable) to a junction. We opt for the steep climb to Tschagerjoch (2,635 metres), the preferred crossing to Vajolet Valley. After the crossing, it goes slightly downhill along Trail No. 54, north to the Vajolethütte mountain hut and then on Trail No. 542 to the Gartlhütte mountain hut near the Vajolet Towers.

To Rifugio Bolzano (Schlernhaus)
To the castle in the mountains - because Rifugio Bolzano is located at an elevation of 2,457 metres: it is accessed via Tschagerjoch (2,635m) Pass. The path leads further into Vajolettal Valley and then onto Trail No. 584 to the Rifugio Passo Principe (Grassleitenpass-Hütte) mountain hut. From there, it crosses over Molignon Pass to Tierser Alpl. The hike follows Trail No. 4 until you arrive at Rifugio Bolzano.
