Runkelstein Castle - the Painted Castle
The Painted Castle: Perched atop a rocky promontory at the entrance to Sarntal Valley, even the castle’s bumpy entrance path will bring the Middle Ages to life.
The romantic Runkelstein Castle, situated at the entrance to Sarntal Valley, is in the Gothic style. The castle is also known as “the painted castle” because of the many illustrated stories on its walls depicting lords hunting and the like: the frescoes portray the cultural zeal and gentility of the castle’s ladies and knights. Even though they date back 600 years, they are still fresh and interesting—the first comic strips, if you will—and are the largest secular fresco cycle in existence. Runkelstein Castle is thus one of the most magnificent of the 40 castles located in the Bolzano/Bozen basin. Runkelstein Castle also plays host to a number of musical events and exhibitions throughout the year. In the castle tavern, you can sample local specialties in a medieval setting.
