Spa treatments using grapes
Grapes used in winemaking, especially their skins and seeds, are rich in natural antioxidants called polyphenols that exfoliate, detoxify, cool inflammation, and soften and repair damaged skin. They also combat damage in the cells caused by free radicals. Another substance called resveratrol is a type of polyphenol found in the skins of red grapes and is credited with slowing the aging process, spurring new cell growth and firming up skin.
These treatments are called vinotherapy and are widely available in South Tyrol, a region acclaimed worldwide for its fine wines.
Therapeutic wine baths are prepared using a special mixture of natural mineral waters, grapes, grape must and biological oils. Vinotherapy massages are carried out using grape berries and are ideal for deeply cleansing skins which have become fatty and contain impurities. In addition, the polyphenols contained in grape seeds combat free radicals and have a beneficial effect on the micro-circulation.
There follows a description of several establishments in South Tyrol which offer vinotherapy treatments.
- The Romantikhotel Turm at Fiè allo Sciliar/Völs am Schlern offers wine baths which are preceded by a complete massage with a peeling effect while lying down on a hot slab of stone. A mixture is then applied comprising grape skins, gypsum and other substances blended with sundrop oil. With the body covered in this way one is immersed in a tub of hot water and served a glass of South Tyrolean red wine. The bath is followed by a massage using grape seed oil.
- The hotel Der Weinmesser at Scena/Schenna offers a series of treatments based on wine. The Vinoble range includes compresses, massages using grape extracts, grape seed baths and grape seed peelings.
- The Hotel Gardena Grödnerhof at Ortisei/St. Ulrich offers an exfoliating bath based on grape skins which, by virtue of their natural fruit acids, smoothen and tone up the skin. The grape skins are a by-product of winemaking and are obtained from biological cultivation and fruit which has been gently pressed. In addition to this bath the hotel also offers grape compresses: grape extracts revitalise and purify the skin, leaving it translucent and moisturised.
- The Hotel & Country Obereggen offers grape skin baths using the company’s own biologically cultivated Chardonnay grapes: the skins are enriched with special clay substances, chalk and grape seed oil, all of which is spread over the body in a thin layer, followed by a relaxing rest on a water bed. The treatment has a tonic effect and has an anti-ageing influence on the skin. The bath is followed by a goat’s milk butter massage.
The thermal springs and baths centre Terme di Merano offers baths using South Tyrolean grape seed oil and “vital” packages based on grapes.
