2018 Italy's cleanest lakes
The Italian League for the Environment (Legambiente) and Touring Club award their top rating, "Five Sails", to the seaside resorts and lakes with the country's cleanest water. Of the three lakes to receive the award in 2018 two are in South Tyrol.
Lago di Monticolo/Montigglersee: in reality two lakes - one large, one small - nestling amid the verdant forest of Monticcolo/Montiggl to the south of Bolzano. The innermost, the small lake, is quiet with a sunbathing lawn and small bar-cum-restaurant, while the large lake has a well-equipped lido with slides, diving boards, a swimming and paddling pools. Both have pathways leading around them providing attractive walks whatever the season.
Laghetto di Fiè/Vöser Weiher: a small lake at approx. 3,400 ft elevation surrounded by coniferous woods and reflecting the mighty Sciliar/Schlern massif on its surface. There are several restaurants and it is a favourite among the local people as an escape from the summer heat. One of South Tyrol's prettiest Alpine farmsteads especially popular among children, the Tuffalm is only a short walk away. Both lakes are only a short drive from Bolzano/Bozen.
