Historic village centres, forts and castles

Forts, castles and estates along the South Tyrolean Wine Road give an insight into the region’s turbulent history. Feel the past after and join in the bustle and bustle of village life.

The villages along the South Tyrolean Wine Road have a unique ambience. The numerous estates in the village centres and the surrounding forts and castles let you delve into the recesses of history. Many hitherto simple farmsteads in the villages were – especially in the 16th and 17th centuries – enlarged into imposing Renaissance estates by builders and craftsmen from northern Italy. The particular blend of Germanic building style with the influence of architects from further south led to what art historians call the “Überetsch style”. Typical features are buildings with courtyards, double lancet windows, loggias, walls with battlements, oriel windows and outside staircases. The village squares possess a southern character and a sense of the “dolce vita” as places where locals meet for a cappuccino or an aperitif. The numerous forts and castles are best explored as part of a short hike.
