South Tyrolean white wine

South Tyrolean producers focus on quality to create excellent wines enjoyed all over the world

In South Tyrol, wine  is rooted in strong traditions, which have flourished into remarkable whites. Born from the painstaking work of winemakers in the cellars and reduced yields to focus on quality over quantity, the white wines of South Tyrol are beloved around the globe. Every year, they appear in the most renowned wine guides and at the top of Italian wine rankings. Aficionados love the intensity of their aromas, their acidity and mineral notes, as well as their strong and fresh character. Let's discover them all together. To fully appreciate the unique atmosphere of our wine-growing regions, we recommend staying at Vinum Hotels.

A white wine with a full flavour and rich aromas, it differs greatly depending on where the vines are grown. It can be full-bodied with fruity aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, or more refined with mineral notes.

Increasingly popular, this wine has established itself as one of the area's leading whites. Born from a grape variety with French origins, South Tyrolean Sauvignon Blanc is either lively and fresh or full-bodied and intense, depending on the production area.

Two top tips for tasting White Wines in South Tyrol

  • IDM Südtirol-Alto Adige

    South Tyrol Pinot Bianco

In South Tyrol, Pinot Bianco has recently experienced a renaissance and has become one of our region's top wines in its own right. The vines can be cultivated up to an altitude of 800 metres, where the grapes best express their characteristics. Although the whole of South Tyrol is therefore ideally suited to this variety, which is also used to produce sparkling wine, it is primarily found in Eppan/Appiano, Kaltern/Caldaro, Terlan/Terlano and Ritten/Renon.

Naturally, its refined acidity is best enjoyed in the places where it thrives. Along the 150 kilometres of the Alto Adige Wine Road, you can find many excellent examples, such as the Pinot Bianco from Cantina Terlano  and the St. Michael- Eppan Winery. Alternatively, you can sample Pinot Bianco from Elena Walch, the first female winegrower in South Tyrol.

    Neustift Abbey Wines

Nestled in the vineyards around Vahrn/Varna, in the Eisack Valley, lies a charming historic institution: Neustift Abbey. In addition to its spiritual function, the monastery has also long played an important role in the world of wine. The wine cellar has actually been part of the abbey since its foundation in 1142, and is one of the oldest in the world still in operation. We recommend a visit to the abbey and a stop to taste the wines of Neustift/Novacella. Innovation and excellence characterise the wines of Neustift Abbey, from Müller Thurgau to the popular white wines of the Classica and Praepositus lines, right through to the single-vineyard wines and more unusual varieties.

The entire area around Neustift Abbey is brimming with oenological excellence: the Eisack Valley is actually the northernmost wine-growing region in Italy. Amid glacial deposits and primitive rocks at altitudes between 400 and 850 metres, where sunny days shift into cold nights, some 20 companies produce the refined  Wines of the Eisack Valley . Take the time to discover these internationally recognised fine white wines.

Gastronomic pairings with South Tyrolean white wines

Perfect combinations with local products

Do you want to experience the flavours of our region at their best? To delight your palate, enjoy South Tyrolean white wines alongside local products. We recommend having a look at the various recipes that we have put together for you, from starters to main courses and desserts.

For example, the liveliness of Müller Thurgau pairs perfectly with cauliflower couscous, black bread chips and radishes, while traditional potato pancakes with sauerkraut  go nicely with the aromatic qualities of Gewürztraminer. For a surprising pairing, try a versatile Pinot Grigio with an elegant and tasty risotto. Finally, to end your meal on a high note, we suggest a Apfelschmarren  (sweet apple omelette) accompanied by a glass of Moscato Giallo.
