    Hiking in South Tyrol

The sun is out, you’re fully packed – now where do you want to go? The peaks, pinnacles and towers of the Dolomites gleam invitingly in the morning light. Are they even more beautiful from the summit? The valleys are criss-crossed with trails through vineyards and apple orchards, past imposing castles, around enchanting lakes and along the Waalweg canal trails. South Tyrol has more than 16,000 km of signposted hiking trails that run through the ever-changing natural landscape, including themed trails, multi-day tours and high-Alpine trails.

    Mountainhut Klosteralm & Saxalbsee Lake
    Schnals/Senales, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

According to oral tradition, after the dissolution of the Carthusian monastery of Allerengelsberg in 1782, the farmed Alpine pastures of Klosteralm (open from the beginning of June to mid / end of October, depending on the weather) at 2,152 m became the property of a number of families in Certosa/Karthaus who set up a syndicate which has thirty members today. The farm was only accessible by a narrow mountain path until a transport cable car was built in 1959. Thanks to the avalanche barrier beneath the Kreuzspitze, a road link was provided as an “ancillary benefit”. Due to its steep and stony pastures, the farm has been used almost exclusively as a typical farm for young cattle.

Lungiarü - Val di Murins - Genova Inn – Pütia
San Martin /San Martino, Dolomites Region Kronplatz/Plan de Corones
A special attraction of the mountaineering village of Campill is "la Val di Morins" (the mills valley), with a total of eight functioning mills, which are another expression of Campill's former self-sufficiency and economic independence. At the very beginning, next to the small chapel, you will find the lime oven, once used for the production of lime. After the Speckstube Tlisöra, you will arrive to a small bridge, which is the starting point of the mill valley.  From here, along the Seres stream, you will pass various types of mills: single mills, double mills and a rope-driven mill (the so-called "Tambra"). Continuing from the mill valley, after a two-hour hike, you will arrive at the "Schlütterhütte" . This refuge is located at the passage from the Villnöss valley to the Ladin Dolomite valleys, surrounded by alpine meadows, lying at 2306 meters above sea level. From here you can reach the Peitlerkofelscharte and then, after a demanding hike, the summit cross of the Peitlerkofel. From here you have a breathtaking view of the Geislerpeaks and the surrounding Dolomites and the Zillertal Alps.

    Schnals/Senales, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

This tour, that can be done from early spring to late autumn, depending on the weather, takes us along the highest grain farm in Europe. Grain was cultivated at this altitude right up to the second half of the last century, when the construction of the dam and reservoir also changed the climate of the Schnalstal Valley. There are archaic structures along this trail that have only changed slightly during the development of mountain farming over thousands of years.

    Certosa/Karthaus - Alpine Farm Penaud
    Schnals/Senales, Vinschgau/Val Venosta

The high mountain valley has always been an important crossing from Laces/Latsch and Kastelbello/Kastellbell in Vinschgau Valley, where there were already settlements during the Copper Age, as seen with the menhir in Latsch. Recent archaeological finds in the ground around the Penaudalm Mountain Hutand the old mountain farm suggest that this area had been used as a hunting ground not only since the Mesolithic Age but that the high plateau already had a seasonal settlement from the Bronze Age on. We are still waiting for the results of analyses to see if the buildings discovered were connected to milk processing, that is to say, cheese production.
