The valleys are criss-crossed with trails through vineyards and apple orchards, past imposing castles, around enchanting lakes and along the Waalweg canal trails. South Tyrol has more than 16,000 km of signposted hiking trails that run through the ever-changing natural landscape, including themed trails, multi-day tours and high-Alpine trails.
This pleasant roundtrip hike brings you to paces with stunning vistas of beautiful landscapes.
The Castle trail „Castelronda“ is about 20 km long and connects the castles and ruins of Bolzano, San Genesio and Terlano: Castle Roncolo/Runkelstein, Castle Rafenstein, Castle Grifo/Greifenstein (vulg. also called Castello del Porco, which means „Pork Castle“), Ruin Helfenberg and Castle Neuhaus (also called Maultasch). The efforts of hikers will be fully satisfied with magnificent views over the most beautiful castles and ruins of the region, in the middle of the nature.
The trail starts at the Castle Roncolo/Runkelstein in Bolzano/Bozen and leads to the Castle Runkelstein passing the San Genesio cable car valley station. Then you continue to Restaurant Noafer in Cologna/Glaning (a hamlet in the municipality of San Genesio), situated above the Castle ruin Grifo/Greifenstein. Next, you reach the Helfenberg castle ruin and at the same time you can enjoy the marvellous panorama of the surrounding area. The descent towards Terlano/Terlan leads you to the final castle ruin Neuhaus/Maultasch and here ends the trail „Castelronda“.
You can choose to start in Bolzano, San Genesio or in Terlano and you can also hike partial sections at your discretion.
The hikes on the „Castelronda/Burgenweg“ trail are especialliy recommended in spring, autumn and winter.
The hike “Perlenweg” links the four villages Deutschnofen|Nova Ponente, Welschnofen|Nova Levante, Steinegg|Collepietra and Tiers|Tires. Those surround the mountains Rosengarten and Latemar. They are part of the Dolomites and count to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Among 80 km (49miles), divided into 5 stages, for each considering 1 day, this hike allows an insight in this breathtaking area.
The Perlenweg is very attractive for professionals or for free time hikers. Easily it can be chosen the level of difficulty. There are few possibilities to take public transport and stops in the traditional hovels. The curiosity of this hike is that it can be mounted from both directions.
Arrival by own car at the public parking space of Cologna. Subsequently on the path n. 9 and n. 11 to the restaurant Noafer and then to the castle ruin Grifo/Greifenstein. (enter at your own risk!)
After visiting the castle ruin Grifo/Greifenstein, turn back to the path n. 9 and walk up to the farm Moar in Rumsein.
Between the restaurant Noafer and the farm Moar in Rumsein, exists a particular route (walking duration 1 hour), which is very suitable for buggies!
From the farm Moar in Rumsein, continue to the Restaurant Plattner, the high point of this hike.
From the restaurant Plattner, you can enjoy the incredible view overlooking the whole city of Bolzano and the beautiful Etsch/Adige Valley!
After this climax of hiking, you can turn back to the Car Parking space Cologna on the path n. 5.

Snowshoe hike with a magnificent panorama. Ascent with the cable car Speikboden and the chairlift Sonnklar to 2,400m. From there turn left onto the Sonnklar Nock and down to lake Trejer, the hut Trejer and back to the mountain station Speikboden at 2,000m. The tour is also possible in the opposite direction.

This first stage of the Multiday Hike - Alpine Pearls is a very varied start to your adventure. The hike begins near Bozen|Bolzano, in the small village of Kardaun|Cardano, at an altitude of 280 metres. On the way to the next little village of Karneid|Cornedo, you will come across numerous vineyards and from a distance you can also catch a view of the imposing castle complex of the Castle of Karneid. Through deciduous forest and later mixed forest, you reach Steinegg|Collepietra at an altitude of 820 metres via the "Rittersteig" trail. Here you will find several places to stop for refreshments and you can also enjoy the unique >Museum of Steinegg. Across the hill "Pstosser Bühl", you can already enjoy the first wonderful views of the Schlern and the Rosengarten. You walk right past the earth pyramids of Steinegg|Collepietra and then descend into the Valley of Tiers|Tires to the small village of Breien|Briè. Along the torrent Briè you reach Tiers|Tires, our first stage destination on our 5-day hike.
Start from the Kampidell parkplace and follow trail to the Jenesiener Jöchl and then walk on with the snowshoes along trail no. 23b until you reach Stoanerne Mandlen. On your way back, walk along trail no. 23b until you reach the Möltner Kaser restaurant and trail no. 28 to come back to your starting point. Duration of the excursioin: 5 hours hours - Drop/rise: 350 m
The Schermoos parkplace is your starting point. Follow trail no. 17 to come to Wetterkreuz walking by Möltner Jöchl. From here, follow trail no. 15 until you reach the Sattlerhütte mountain refuge and come back to your starting point on trail no. 17 or 17a. Duration of the excursion: 4 hours - Drop/rise: 350 m
The Tappeinerweg trail is an approx. 6 km long promenade in the city of Meran/Merano. Long sections of the path offer wonderful views of the city of Merano. The Tappeinerweg has a wide variety of predominantly Mediterranean trees and shrubs.
The Tomanegger restaurant is your starting point. Follow trail no. 30 on the Salten an walk on along trail no. 6/12B, until you reach the Gschnofer Stall restaurant. From here, follow trails no. 7a and 7, and then trail no. 10 to come back to Wirtshof and trail no. 30 to come back to your starting point. Duration of the excursion: 3 hours - Drop/rise 313 m

Italy’s first premium winter trail is located on the Rittner Horn mountain. Along the trail, especially during the descent from the Rittner Horn peak to the Unterhorn inn, you can enjoy panoramic views of the fascinating Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Route: the winter hike begins at the mountain station of the Bergbahn Rittner Horn cable car on the Schwarzseespitze peak. Pass by the Runder Tisch viewpoint and the “Dolomitoskop” on the panoramic trail no. 19 to the Unterhorn inn. Bear left at the Feltuner Hütte mountain hut and continue following the markers up to the Rittner Horn, the highest point. Head via the Alpine pastures down to the Unterhornhaus inn and to the Schwarzenseespitze.
An alternative route for families with children: take only the smaller circular route along the panoramic trail. Walking time: approx 1 hour.
Tip: The easy way to get from Bolzano/Bozen to Soprabolzano/Oberbozen is on the Rittner Seilbahn cable car. Continue on the narrow-gauge railway to Collalbo/Klobenstein. Finally take bus 166 to the valley station of the Bergbahn Rittner Horn cable car.
