    Hiking in South Tyrol

    The sun is out, you’re fully packed – now where do you want to go? The peaks, pinnacles and towers of the Dolomites gleam invitingly in the morning light. Are they even more beautiful from the summit? The valleys are criss-crossed with trails through vineyards and apple orchards, past imposing castles, around enchanting lakes and along the Waalweg canal trails. South Tyrol has more than 16,000 km of signposted hiking trails that run through the ever-changing natural landscape, including themed trails, multi-day tours and high-Alpine trails.

    Description:
    The hike starts at the K-Express mountain station. From here, a wide forest path initially leads slightly downhill through dense, green forests. The trail is well prepared and covered with gravel, which makes it suitable for inexperienced hikers or families with prams. There is always the opportunity to stop and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain peaks of the Zillertal Alps.After about half of the trail, the forest opens up to reveal extensive meadows. Alpine cattle often graze here and the colourful mountain flowers are a delight to the eye. The route continues on well-maintained forest paths and finally leads down into the valley to Steinhaus. The valley station of the K-Express awaits you there. There you have the opportunity to fortify yourself in one of the many inns.

    This easy hike is perfect for a relaxing day in nature, where you can enjoy the beauty of the Alps to the full. Make sure you wear good shoes and take plenty of water and snacks with you. It is also important to respect nature and not leave any rubbish behind.

    At St. Ulrich you will find a small romanesque church and a great panoramic view on the surrounding mountains is waiting for you. The church St. Ulrich was restored in 1859 and the altar picture of the Saint Bishop Ulrich was made by the painter Psenner Ulrich from Ums. 

    Also in the guesthouse St. Ulrich wich lies directly by the church, you will find a stunning view, relaxation, good and typical food and a playground for the little ones.

    Winter alpine hut hike from Karersee | Carezza to Welschnofen | Nova Levante

    A winter alpine hut hike that starts in the small holiday village of Karersee | Carezza and leads through a snow-covered fairy-tale landscape to Welschnofen | Nova Levante. Along the way, you can enjoy impressive views of the snow-covered Dolomites while walking through forest paths and gently sloping meadows. Along the route, several huts invite you to take a cozy break, including the Franzin Alm hut, the Ochsenhütte hut, the Restaurant Tschein, the Frommeralm hut, and the Hagneralm hut.

    The Felsenweg (Rock Trail) is a well-maintained hiking trail close to the edge of the mountain, a rather easy and flat path but you need to be sure-footed and free from giddiness. Take special care if the ground is slippery - you should avoid the hike in case of snow and ice as well as on hot summer days. After heavy rain there’s also a risk of rockfall!

    Long winter circular hike at Lake Carezza

    In its winter coat, Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lake Carezza) has a charm of its own. The water surface, which appears so crystal clear and inviting in summer, transforms in the cold months into an enchanting world of ice and snow, surrounded by the white Dolomite mountains of Rosengarten | Catinaccio and Latemar. The long circular trail starts from the small holiday village of Karersee | Carezza, crosses the suspension bridge, then passes by Lake Carezza and continues into the snowy Latemar forest, where you can enjoy the fresh mountain air and tranquility.

    The village tour of Selva Val Gardena

    The village tour in Selva starts directly at the Selva Tourist Office.

    From there, follow the signs towards Vallunga/Langental on path no. 14 to the Silvester chapel. To the left of the chapel you now go over the Way of the Cross in the direction of Daunëi. At the beginning of the path you can see the ruins of Selva Castle on the top right. From Daunëi it is now a bit downhill until we reach the old railway path, which we take in the direction of S. Cristina.

    As soon as we have reached the district of La Poza, we cross the street towards the district of La Sëlva. We can already see the Castel/GardenaFischburg from afar, where our path leads along. Then it goes back to the starting point via the walkingpath of La Sëlva.

    Short winter circular hike at Lake Carezza

    The short circular trail leads directly around Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza), which is often frozen and covered in a blanket of snow during winter. Surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Latemar and Rosengarten | Catinaccio, it offers a picturesque view of the Dolomites. The prepared path is particularly suitable for a relaxed winter walk. The peaceful, snow-covered landscape and the frozen waters of the lake, with its sparkling ice crystals, create a special atmosphere, ideal for a short break in nature.

    Ideal continuation from lake Klaussee to return to the mountian station. Trail no. 33b hike time: 1hrs modest elevation gain from Lake Klaussee. The trail starts from the lake, passes through moraine hills, by an old cattle shed and reaches the "Breite Rast", where there is a fantastic view of the Zillertal Alps. From there, one can either descend to the upper cableway station or continue crossing the "Großklausental" and "Ploden", to St. Jacob or Steinhaus.

    Winter hike from Lake Carezza to the Häusler Sam hut

    This relaxing winter hike leads through idyllic snow-covered forests and meadows to the rustic Häusler Sam hut, which is modestly situated in a clearing surrounded by forest.     The Val Gardena railway trail runs along the entire length of the valley and takes you past woods, meadows, hamlets and local sights on the sunny side of the valley. Choose between Selva, S. Cristina and Ortisei as your starting point. The walk follows the course of the former Val Gardena railway, which was built during the First World War – in the years 1915-1916.

    On a section of the path you will find a number of bronze sculptures by local artists. These give walkers and hikers an insight into the fascinating history of art in the Gardena Valley.

    Along the railway line trail from La Poza towards S. Cristina there is a snow gauge, which measures the amount of snowfall for the period from 1951 to the present day.

    Hike: Circuit Hike Torre dei Scarperi/ Schwabenalpenkopf

    This long but absolutely beautiful hike offers you spectacular views at the 3 Cime, once you reach the Gwengalpenjoch/passo Alpe Mattina. The path is a bit steep. If you have a good physical constitution you may make a longer round reaching the Passo Rondoi/Wildgrabenjoch where you can see the 3 Cime even better. You can reach the Innerfeld valley by bus/shuttlebus or you plan your next tour ending in the Innerfeld valley where you have parked your car p.e. the wonderful Mount Gsell starting at the Fischleintal (see tour 2) You can also do the hike vice versa, but as described it is more beautiful.

    Mountain hike: Dolomites Alpine Ridgeway (Dolomiten-Höhenweg) No. 5

    The Dolomites High Trail no. 5, also known as the Tiziano High Trail, is a challenge for experienced mountaineers with stamina and climbing skills.
    The trail starts in Sesto, in the Three Peaks Dolomites region in Alta Pusteria, and ends in Pieve di Cadore.
    The route runs for about 90 kilometres, divided into 7 stages and can be divided into three different parts corresponding to the Dolomite groups crossed: first part, Croda dei Tòni and Popèra; second part, Marmaròle; third part, the Antelao.

    Most of the huts are open from the beginning of July to the end of September.
    It is advisable to book your accommodation well in advance.

    The recommended time of year for this hike is from the end of June to the end of September
    The high-altitude trail is marked with red-white-red markings.

    Winter hike from the Paolina car park to Lake Carezza

    This winter hike starts at the Paolina parking lot and follows a well-maintained path through an enchanting snow-covered landscape. The trail gently descends, offering impressive views of the snow-clad mountain ranges of the Rosengarten | Catinaccio and Latemar along the way. On the way, you will also pass the small St Joseph's Chapel.

    After a leisurely walk, you arrive at the picturesque Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza), which in winter is framed by a thick blanket of snow and exudes a special calm. The lake invites you to pause and rewards hikers with a unique panorama.

    This winter hike follows a leisurely route from Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza) through snow-covered forests to the Frin meadows and continues to the Frommeralm hut. Along the way, the path offers beautiful views of the surrounding Dolomites, particularly the imposing Rosengarten | Catinaccio. The destination of the hike is the Frommeralm hut, which is perfect for a well-deserved break. Here, you can enjoy regional specialties in a cozy atmosphere and fully savor the winter ambiance.

    Family hiking tour: Niederdorf - Aufkirchen - Toblach - Niederdorf

    The walk begins in Niederdorf/Villabassa at Von Kurz Square. From there, it follows well-marked paths towards Aufkirchen/Santa Maria, an idyllic village with traditional houses and magnificent panoramic views. The highest point of the hike is at 1,300 meters, where you can take a break to enjoy the impressive view of the South Tyrolean mountain landscape.

    There is now an alternative route for the way back: instead of returning directly to Niederdorf/Villabassa, the path leads via Toblach/Dobbiaco. Here you follow route no. 11B, which descends slightly and runs through forests and meadows. Toblach/Dobbiaco is ideal for a short stopover before returning to Niederdorf/Villabassa via the same route or by public transport. This variant extends the hike and offers additional scenic variety.

    A walking trail dedicated to the Alpine Ski Champions in Val Gardena.

    The route is dedicated to all those who have won a World Cup race since 1969 or a World Championship race in 1970 in Val Gardena, as well as to who believed in the idea of skiing in Val Gardena with great ambition and pioneering spirit.

    This themed trail starts in the village center of Selva, behind the Ski School. It is a journey through the history of skiing in Val Gardena, from the beginnings of Alpine skiing, to its establishment as a world-famous ski area which hosts breath-taking ski world cup races every year. In the audio guide you are accompanied by Erich Demetz, honorary citizen of Selva, pioneer and conceiver of the alpine Ski World Cup races in Val Gardena and President for 28 years of the FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski).

    This fascinating story should not be forgotten!

    Beautiful hike to the summit of the Klausberg. Offers an enchanting panoramic view of the Dolomites, Zillertal Alps, Durreck and Rieserferner Group. Trail no. 33 hike time: 3 to 3.5 hrs elevation gain: 1050 m From the Klausberg upper station to Lake Klaussee. From there, the trail continues to the pass and then, in about 20 minutes it reaches the summit (the section from the pass to the summit involves some light bouldering). You can descend by the same trail. Tip: from "Jochkofel", passing Obersteiner Alm, down to Luttach or through the Pojental to Sand in Taufers (fantastic hike requiring an additional three to four hours).
