    Tschögglberg Hiking Area

The Tschögglberg is the mountain ridge of the Sarntal Alps from which there are wonderful views of Lana. The Salten plateau is situated on this imposing mountain range.

The Salten is distinguished by its relatively flat hiking trails, which invite visitors to enjoy leisurely walks in the broad meadows and forests of the plateau. A hike through the largest larch meadow in Europe also offers a wonderful insight into the legend-shrouded world of South Tyrol.

On the side of the path hikers and bikers can learn about the mystical figures that lived on the Salten plateau according to ancient tales.

Thanks to its location, the Tschögglberg offers a fantastic view of the Dolomites, the Etschtal Valley and Lake Kalterersee. The lovely hiking area can also be reached without a car. Cable cars run up to the Tschögglberg from the villages of Vilpiano and Postal. The wonderful hiking trails onto the plateau start from the mountain stations.

    Geologic route "Höllental"
Tramin an der Weinstraße/Termeno sulla Strada del Vino, Alto Adige Wine Road

Along the geological path you will find a lot of signs and stations that shows the geology and the connected relations. The main attraction of the trail is the "Höllenbach" catastrophe of 1986. Following the path you will arrive on a big rock of tufa and the S. Nepomuk santuary. This rock last a violent mudslud and reminds the power of nature. The next sign reminds the mudslide of 1986. Just a short look to the panorama shows the different layers of rock from Montan to Weis and Schwarzhorn. Nearby you will find another rock. That's a Voltago conglomerate who resisted a mudslide 245 millions of years ago. After it there's the possibility to take a little break on a quiet island with 5 columns and a little bench with some small different rockets from the sourroundings. On the dam of the river a sign will explane you the different layers of the rock infront of you. The last sign indicate some fossils which where found in the river bed and with a bit of luck also you could find one.

    Gargazon/Gargazzone - Kröll Tower Trail
    Gargazon/Gargazzone, Meran/Merano and environs

The "Kröllturmrunde" ... all around this is not difficult! Observation platform and rest areas make the newly designed path on Kröllturm varied and attractive.

Above Gargazon, the Kröll tower, which dates back to the Middle Ages, rises out of the forest. But the tower is not at the beginning of the way. From the village square in Gargazon, a guidance system guides hikers to the Kröllturmrunde, access and view to the waterfall included.

You should not have it in a hurry. Rather, the Kröllturmrunde is a pleasure hike for the whole family. Along the way there are rest areas, some with loungers, others with seating. They are called "Halfway", "Untermturm" and "Obernturm", also at the old quarry there are rest opportunities with beach chairs.

And after the hike? Nothing like in the water: best in the natural pool in Gargazzone, the only public natural bath in the west of South Tyrol, sustainably built, of course created and easily accessible, even by bike, bus and train.

Hiking to the earth pyramids near Unterinn
    Ritten/Renon, Bolzano/Bozen and environs

Earth Pyramids, a wonder of nature. The Renon Earth Pyramids are the highest and the most aesthetically pleasing in Europe. Earth pyramids are a phenomenon of erosion. They originate where ice-age glaciers have deposited moraine clay in valleys. When it is dry, it is rock-hard. If it comes into contact with water, it turns into a clayey pulp that flows down into the valley. However, when protected from the rain by large stones, the clay remains dry and hard. Only the part around the stone erodes. This is how earth columns are formed and become higher each time it rains. If the top stone falls off the peak, the column is certainly doomed to a quick decline because the clay is exposed to the rain and then carried away by it. The earth pyramids in the valley of the Rio Gasterer at Auna di Sotto have a special grey colour.

Paths along the irrigation channels in Merano
    Partschins/Parcines, Meran/Merano and environs

The Merano irrigation channels trails (Waalwege) represent a union of eleven trails around Meran/Merano in South Tyrol. Waalwege trails are narrow walking paths that run along historic water canals. These channels were once used to irrigate the fields and date back to the 13th century.

Vines, apple trees, pines, cypresses, firs and larches line these special Waalwege canal trails, which in South Tyrol can only be found around Meran and in the Vinschgau valley. Castles, palaces and chapels along the way offer insights into the culture of the region. Meanwhile, traditional inns invite you to take a break.

The circular tour on the Merano Canal Trails is approx. 80 km long, going round the entire Meran basin. Remaining at nearly the same elevation throughout, the circular tour runs along the Etschtal valley’s mountains. This makes the entire route and also the individual stages ideal for leisure hikers and families.

The Merano Canal Trail can be hiked all year round and connects eleven irrigation canals (Waalwege) with one another: the Algunder Waalweg, the Kuenser Waalweg, the Waalweg Riffian, the Maiser Waalweg, the Schenner Waalweg, the Brandiswaalweg in Lana, the Tschermser Waalweg, the Marlinger Waalweg, the Partschinser Waalweg, the Rablander Waalweg and the Wallburgweg in Naturns/Naturno.
