This beautiful trail circuit is challenging but definitely worthwhile.
Itinerary
You start in Karthaus at 1,323 metres above sea level at the public car park next to the bus stop. From there, turn left to the fire station building, which you pass on the left to reach hiking trail no. 13, which leads up through dense forest to the Klosteralm at 2,150 metres above sea level. At the next fork, keep left following the signs to Saxalbsee. The trail leads over rocky and somewhat exposed terrain, at the end somewhat steeply up to the lake. The lake is located in a unique setting at 2,470 metres above sea level. From there, the trail continues around the Gamseck and up to the Gamsegg at 2,848 metres above sea level, along the ridge to the Trumsspitze at 2,914 metres above sea level. At the fork in the path, turn left down over scree and rubble to the next crossroads, where you turn left towards no. 23 B Kreuzspitze. Here the path is easier to walk again and up to the Kreuzspitze at 2,575 metres above sea level along a slope for another 200 metres in altitude. The descent from the Kreuzspitze begins over somewhat exposed terrain with stone steps until you cross the path towards Klosteralm again. Turn left down here and the descent continues along the same path as the ascent.
