The ridge of the Schneid (eng: “edge”) is an authentic walk on the edge in every sense of the word, forming as it does the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. But have no fear: From a technical point of view, this hike is not particularly difficult. However, given its length, it does call for a bit of stamina. The breathtaking views over the South Tyrol and Trentino Dolomites will reward you for your efforts.
The set-off point is the Seiser Alm cable car mountain station. At the tourist information office, the walk leads off towards Panorama. If you prefer, you can save yourself this effort and take the Panorama lift. From here, past the Hotel Goldknopf, the Edelweißhut and the Almrosenhut you reach the Mahlknecht mountain hut. The trail leads over a small stream and up the Plattkofel. The Schneid trail leads on in a series of easy uphills and downs to the Plattkofelhut, without any particular elevation difference. The walk offers beautiful views over the Seiser Alm right over to the Schlern and the Duron Valley. The Fassajoch is the highest point of the walk.
Continue onwards, past the Zallinger mountain hut and the Hotel Tirler, down to Saltria (here you can take the chairlift Florian alternatively) and on to Compatsch. Alternatively, you can take the bus from Saltria back to Compatsch (Almbus n. 11).
