The Niklaser Theme Trail harmoniously combines nature, knowledge, and sensory experience. With a walking time of about three hours, it’s a moderately long hike designed to encourage mindfulness and discovery. Along the way, interactive stations invite you to see, listen, smell, and explore — a path that stimulates both mind and senses. Starting from the parking area in St. Nikolaus, the trail begins at an information board marked by the symbol of two church towers. Following these signs, the route leads along the Marienweg into the forest — a gentle ascent into the natural surroundings of Kaltern.

A path for curiosity and reflection
Early on, hikers encounter a traditional weather cross, accompanied by a short explanation of its history and meaning. Soon after, striking geological rock formations appear, illustrating the diversity of the local terrain.
As the trail climbs, a small viewpoint with benches and two wooden towers appears — a charming feature that frames the real twin towers of St. Nikolaus perfectly, encouraging visitors to pause and take in the view.

Play, nature, and discovery
Further along lies a wooden “Tic-Tac-Toe” game, a playful stop for all ages. The trail continues uphill to the historic Frauenbrünnl spring, a site steeped in local tradition, accompanied by an information board explaining its significance.
Nearby, two panels offer insights into the local flora and fauna, while the gentle sound of a wooden xylophone marks a sound station where visitors can listen to nature’s harmony. Soon after, a large log carved with the words “Smell me” invites hikers to engage their sense of smell — with wood shavings from a local tree species tucked inside a hollow.

Views and quiet moments
Higher up, a platform with five carved wooden thrones offers a regal resting spot and a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The following “ant path,” marked by artistically carved ants on a log, passes several fenced anthills, offering a glimpse into the microcosm of the forest. A short distance ahead, an old water reservoir and an explanatory board highlight the importance of water in the region, with a fountain nearby providing a refreshing refill for bottles.

A peaceful conclusion
The loop ends at the pilgrimage church of St. Nikolaus, a tranquil place rich in history and spirituality. An information panel recounts its heritage, offering a thoughtful and quiet close to this sensorial journey through Kaltern’s natural and cultural landscape.
