Even though Weißbrunnsee and Fischersee are reservoirs, they are still very impressive, especially when viewed from above. At Weißbrunnsee there once was the Enzian restaurant, which became very famous thanks to the Piedmontese chef Giancarlo Godio. Well-known personalities had themselves flown in by helicopter to enjoy his delicacies. In 1978 he was awarded a Michelin star. However, he died in 1994 and the restaurant has been closed for a long time now. Nature here unfolds a special beauty in autumn when the many larches change color. Also noteworthy are the Pilshöfe encountered during the descent. The typical paired farms are impressive testimonies of the former building culture.
This tour is taken from the book “Öffi Touren in Südtirol” by Rosmarie Rabanser Gafriller (Athesia Tappeiner Verlag).
Itinerary
From the bus stop at the end of Weißbrunnsee (1890 m), follow path 140, passing above two huts you soon reach path 107, which you turn left onto. It leads through larch forest uphill, reaches open pasture areas, and the path towards Fischersee then turns left. Almost flat, you walk along the lake and further to the junction of the path, where you go left down to the Fiechtalm (a place to stop for refreshments). Past this, it continues left and on partly steep path 101 you reach the Weißbrunn reservoir. At the next fork, turn right and enter the area of the dam. On this, walk up to the Weißbrunn access road. There, keep right, walk for a short time alongside the road until path 140 leads down to the right. On this, you now stroll pleasantly down to the historic Pilshöfe. Past these, path 140/142 still descends above the gorge of the Falschauer until shortly before the village center of St. Gertraud, then you continue on the road through the village of St. Gertraud to the Lahner sawmill. Shortly afterwards, you reach the bus stop.
It is recommended to have the departure times of public transport in mind already before starting the hike (using the app "suedtirolmobil"). Not all areas are equipped with a functioning internet connection.
Sturdy footwear, rain and sun protection, drinks, some provisions
Summiteers have the option above the Fiechtalm to reach the Nagelstein (2469 m) in about an hour and then possibly descend to St. Gertraud via path 107.
Public-transport-friendly From the end of May to the beginning of November, the starting point can be reached from the Ultental by bus line 243. Stop Weißbrunnsee (bus line 243 from end of May to beginning of November).
