The Mendel Pass - a crossing from the Adige Valley to the Non Valley - was once a noble health resort, which flourished especially after the completion of the panoramic road in 1885 and lost its importance due to the First World War and its political consequences. In 1903, the Mendel funicular was built, which departed from St. Anton. It was the steepest of its kind at the time, is still in operation today and has been part of South Tyrol's transportation structures for over 20 years. A ride on this cable car is an experience! In the carriages with panoramic roofs, you climb 854 meters in altitude in twelve minutes. The walk up to the panoramic Penegal will probably take a little longer. But it's worth it, the path is interesting and there is also a summit cross. However, you should not overlook the turn-off to the summit. The ascent runs along the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. The Regole di Malosco, on the other hand, clearly belong to Trentino.
This tour is taken from the book “Öffi Touren in Südtirol” by Rosmarie Rabanser Gafriller (Athesia Tappeiner Verlag).
Itinerary
From the top station of the funicular (1374 m) on the Mendel, walk towards Mendelstraße. Keep right there and walk along it for a short distance. After the beer garden, take path 500 uphill towards Penegal. The small road turns into a hiking trail. You cross the road twice and soon afterwards have the option of walking out to the right to the summit cross. You can return to the path or continue along the panoramic path above the rock faces. You soon reach the Hotel Penegal (refreshments available, 1715 m), past which you continue straight on until you reach path 508 (Regole di Malosco), which branches off to the left. Take a pleasant walk downhill across larch meadows, past the Malosco-Alm (refreshments available) to the Regole. Even before the refreshment stops at the Regole, path 2 turns off to the left. Initially through sparse larch forest and then through spruce forest. You cross forest paths, pay attention to the markings, there is another ascent and you finally reach the road that leads to the Penegal. Shortly before this, a hiking trail turns off to the right and you reach the Grandhotel on the Mendel Pass and the Mendelstraße and return to the Mendelbahn mountain station.
