The Dürer path - Lago Santo to the earth pyramids of segonzano

From Lake Santo, the Dürer Trail crosses the Cembra Valley to the spectacular Segonzano Earth Pyramids.

From Lake Santo, the Dürer Trail leads through the varied landscapes of Trentino to the spectacular Segonzano Earth Pyramids. While the first section of the route is characterised by mountain forests and alpine meadows, this part highlights the terraced vineyards of the Cembra Valley, historic villages and remarkable cultural landmarks.

The trail initially descends through beech and conifer forests before reaching the Cembra Valley. Along the way, magnificent views open over steep slopes and centuries-old vineyard terraces supported by traditional dry-stone walls. Passing through Cembra, hikers enter one of Trentino’s most renowned wine-growing areas.

Among the highlights are the historic Ponte di Cantilaga crossing the Avisio River and the ruins of Segonzano Castle, perched high above the valley on a rocky outcrop. Albrecht Dürer himself sketched the castle during his journey to Italy.

The final destination is the famous Segonzano Earth Pyramids. Formed by the erosion of ancient glacial deposits, these remarkable columns rank among Trentino’s most impressive natural monuments and provide a spectacular conclusion to the historic Dürer Trail.
Itinerary
From Lake Santo, follow the Dürer Trail markings (AD) downhill towards the Cembra Valley. The route initially crosses beech and conifer forests and offers beautiful views of Trentino’s vineyards.

Using the local sections of the Dürer Trail, hikers reach Cembra, the main town of the valley. The trail then continues through the characteristic terraced vineyards of the Cembra Valley, following Dürer Trail signs along quiet paths and minor roads.

The route reaches the historic Ponte di Cantilaga over the Avisio River. After crossing the bridge, the trail climbs gently to the ruins of Segonzano Castle, one of the most important historical landmarks along the route.

Following the signs, hikers finally arrive at the Segonzano Earth Pyramids. These extraordinary erosion formations mark the end of the hike and one of Trentino’s most famous natural attractions.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Lake Santo is only partially accessible by public transport. The nearest bus services operate via Cembra, Grumes and the surrounding villages.

For the return journey, bus connections are available from Segonzano to Cembra and Trento, with onward links to the regional rail and bus network.

Directions

GETTING THERE

The starting point of the hike is Lake Santo (Lago Santo), located above the Cembra Valley in Trentino. Access is possible via the municipalities of Cembra Lisignago or Altavalle-Grumes. Mountain roads lead towards the lake, with the final section completed on foot.

From the Segonzano Earth Pyramids, road connections are available towards Cembra, Trento and the Adige Valley.

Parking

Public parking areas are available near Lake Santo. As parking spaces are limited, especially during weekends and the summer season, an early arrival is recommended.
