As you approach the village of Unser Frau in Schnals, the 65-metre-high dam wall catches your eye. Behind it is the 100-hectare Vernagt reservoir, which was created 70 years ago to dam up the water of the Schnals stream. Eight farms in the village of Vernagt disappeared in the floods. The tower of the church can still be seen today when the water level is low in spring. A village of the same name called Vernagt was subsequently built above the lake. Nowadays, the water is used to generate electricity at the Naturno power station. Even though it is an artificial lake, the water is a beautiful color and the lake has its charm. There is a hiking trail around the lake, part of which is included in this route. Above the lake, the historic Finailhof farm looks down into the valley alongside other farms: with its sunburnt wooden cladding and old parlors, the farm is a real gem and you can stop off here as part of this hike. No less significant is the Marchegghof, which includes several buildings. It is a listed building and was the filming location for the movie "Das finstere Tal" and some scenes of the "Bozen-Krimis". This tour is taken from the book “Öffi Touren in Südtirol” by Rosmarie Rabanser Gafriller (Athesia Tappeiner Verlag).
