In the Taisten alpine hut area, several mountain huts invite hikers to stop and enjoy local specialties. This makes the area a popular hiking destination and the alpine parking area is often quite busy. For this reason alone, it is recommended to use public transport. Once leaving the forest roads that lead to the huts, the crowds quickly disappear. The hike also offers the chance to conquer three peaks. Although these summits are popular as well, the relatively steep ascent keeps the large crowds away. Reaching the first summit cross, the breathtaking views and mountain scenery immediately make all efforts worthwhile.
This tour is taken from the book "Öffi Touren in Südtirol" by Rosmarie Rabanser Gafriller (Athesia Tappeiner Verlag).
From the bus stop (1580 m), the route follows the road uphill to the parking area and then continues along forest road no. 31 towards the Lutterkopf peak. After two bends in the road, the trail branches off to the left and climbs steadily uphill. The ascent leads through forest on rocky paths and later over root-covered trails. Shortly before reaching the summit cross of the Lutterkopf peak (2145 m), the terrain opens up and rewards hikers with wide panoramic views. Continuing past the summit cross and staying on trail no. 31, the route leads towards the next peak, the Durakopf peak. Before the ascent begins, the trail branches off to the right towards the Taisten Alm hut (refreshment stop, 2012 m), also known as Taisten Vorderalm hut or Neue Taistner Sennhütte hut. The hut can be reached after about 20 minutes of descent. The forest road back to the Mudlerhof branches off to the left and leads back to the bus stop.
Additional summit options:
Durakopf peak (2275 m): Continue on trail no. 31 to the Durakopf peak. Descend on trail no. 54, then turn right onto trail no. 38 descending to the Taisten Alm hut.
Rudlhorn peak (2448 m): From the Durakopf peak, descend first about 85 vertical metres on trail no. 54 and then continue to the Rudlhorn peak; descend to the Taisten Alm hut via trail no. 54B.
It is recommended to check the departure times of public transport before starting the hike (for example using the “suedtirolmobil” app). Not all areas have a reliable internet connection.
Sturdy footwear, rain and sun protection, drinks and some snacks
From the Rudlhorn peak (2448 m), the hike can be extended to a fourth summit, the Eisatz peak (2493 m).
Accessible by train and bus. From the Welsberg-Gsies train station, take bus line 438 to the Mudler parking area above Taisten.
