The Ahr has its source in Lahnacher Moos under the Dreiherrenspitze and after 48,5 km it flows into the Rienz in Bruneck. By this point it has dropped a downhill grade of 1160 m. From the bridge near Kematen heading into the valley until Oberluttach there is a nice walking trail along the banks of the Ahr River.
HEADING TOWARDS AHRNTAL: From the bus stop in the centre of Sand you go up the main Ahrntalerstreet towards the valley until you reach the bridge just below the Taufers Castle. From there you walk along the left side of the river bank (orogr. right side) towards Luttach. In Drittelsand, just before the Speikboden cable car, turn right and cross the wooden bridge over the Ahr River. Turn left and keep going along the river bank to Luttach or further to Oberluttach. The way back is the same way or you can return by bus. This path is walkable all year round except for when it is iced up.
Take line 450 to Sand in Taufers and get off at the bus station. From here, walk 5 minutes upstream alongside the main road until you reach the starting point.
Exact bus connections can be found on Südtirol Mobil.
We drive to the end of the village of Sand and park at the "Alpenrosenparkplatz" (payable), which is located on the left-hand side.
