The Little Unterland Circuit is a pleasant and easy bicycle tour through the idyllic South Tyrolean Unterland/Bassa Atesina, suitable for touring, trekking, city, and mountain bikes. Spanning approximately 36 km with a minimal elevation change of about 79 m, this tour is ideal for a relaxed cycling trip. The route mainly follows paved, low-traffic roads and the traffic-free Adige Cycle Path, making it accessible year-round – best during the months of spring, late summer, autumn, and winter.
Itinerary
Start at the main square in Auer and take the Palainweg to the Adige bridge. After crossing the bridge, follow the main road for about 500 m in the direction of Tramin a.d.W., then at the end of Mitterberg turn right towards Klughammer or Lake Caldaro. After only 400 m, turn left onto a farm road and continue south towards Neumarkt, crossing a main road. At the second main road, follow it to the Neumarkt train station. At the roundabout in front of the station, take the second exit towards Kurtatsch a.d.W. From there, continue straight for 5 km to the Adige bridge near St. Florian, cross it, immediately turn right onto the Adige cycle path and continue to Salurn a.d.W. Cycle through Salurn a.d.W., turn left after the church and then head north again (towards Buchholz/Gfrill), but before the road starts climbing, continue straight to Laag. In Laag, join the Adige cycle path again and cycle back north, passing Neumarkt and returning to Auer.
Pay attention to traffic safety, especially when crossing and riding on traffic roads. Always wear a helmet and appropriate protective clothing. Check your bike for functionality before the tour.
A well-maintained bicycle (touring bike, trekking bike, city bike, or mountain bike), helmet, water bottles, possibly a small snack for the road, and basic repair tools.
Take your time to explore the historic centres of Auer/Ora and Neumarkt/Egna along the route – cozy cafés, quiet alleyways and traditional wine farms make for perfect rest stops. A short detour through Neumarkt’s elegant arcades is especially rewarding. If you ride in late autumn, you’ll enjoy crisp views and peaceful paths – ideal for a relaxed outing away from the crowds.
Auer/Ora and Neumarkt/Egna are easily accessible by public transport. Use the regional train services to reach the starting point of the tour.
