Hikes in the Fischleintal Valley

The near-flat terrain of the Fischleintal Valley, which undulates between 1,300 and 1,500 m above sea level and stretches over 4.5 kilometres, makes it the ideal location to walk in nature all year round. It is also one of the access points to the Three Peaks Nature Park

Not far from the Austrian border, walking in the Fischleintal Valley/Val Fiscalina is an ideal adventure for anyone looking to escape, surrounded by evocative landscapes, meadows and coniferous forests. Easy to navigate on foot or by bicycle, there are countless excursions on offer, suitable for different levels of experience. Thanks to the lodges at different altitudes, everyone can set off with confidence and their rucksack on their back to enjoy an experience tailored to their preferences and physical fitness. There are also plenty of easy trails in the Fischleintal Valley. The valley also offers a convenient access point to the Three Peaks Nature Park, which is dedicated to preserving the habitats of animal and plant species. We have selected the following hikes for you:

Talschlusshütte refuge: how to get there

Walk from Moos/Moso to the Talschlusshütte refuge

Hiking through the Fischleintal Valley offers scenic walks suitable for all. Starting in Moos, walk for about 5 kilometres, traversing the valley lengthwise on a scenic path through meadows, shaded in places by dense coniferous forests. Running parallel to the path is the Fischleinbach stream, which runs almost dry in warm weather and flourishes in the colder months. In winter, this route takes on a special charm. You can walk on the beaten snow, immersed in a world of whiteness, which contrasts against the dark green of the conifers and the warm tones of the Dolomite rocks. The landmarks along the way are the Sexten Dolomites, in particular Einserkofel and Zwölferkofel, which seem to mark the end of the hike. At the foot of these rocky peaks lies the destination of the route: the Talschlusshütte, at an altitude of 1,548 m.

  • Duration: 40–45 minutes (one-way)
  • Elevation gain: 100–200 metres

Hike to the Sasso di Sesto

The significant elevation gain makes this hike quite demanding. The route starts in Sexten/Sesto in the Fischleintal Valley. Even the first section, up to the Antonio Locatelli hut, requires a notable climb in altitude. From this point, the climb continues up to the summit of the Sasso di Sesto. The path traverses the characteristic Dolomite landscape. After a strenuous hike, you will be rewarded with a close-up view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

  • Duration: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation gain: 1,000 metres

Hike to the Crode Fiscaline

Also known as the Crode dei Piani, the Crode Fiscaline mountain group can be reached from the Fischleintal Valley by way of a demanding hike. Starting from the Piano Fiscalina refuge, you will ascend over gravel terrain and steep rock faces. At a certain point, the first lodge, Comici (Zsigmondyhütte), comes into view, at the foot of the Zwölferkofel. You will then have to walk for another hour and a half or so, climbing 300 metres, before you reach another lodge, the Pian di Cengia, at 2,528 m. From here, the beaten path leads up to the summit, where you can admire overhangs and unique views of the surrounding peaks.

  • Duration: 3–4 hours uphill
  • Elevation gain: 1,200 metres

Lodges in the Fischleintal Valley and surrounding area

    Zsigmondyhütte refuge

Not to be confused with the refuge named after Emilio Comici in Val Gardena, the Zsigmondy-Comici Hütte refuge is located in the Sexten Dolomites at an altitude of 2,224 m, overlooking a rocky expanse at the foot of the Zwölferkofel. Starting from the Talschlusshütte refuge in the Fischleintal Valley, you can ascend along sunny and partly stony paths for an elevation gain of about 700 metres. The Zsigmondyhütte is the first or third stage of the circular hike of the three refuges, which can be travelled clockwise or anticlockwise. Named after an Austrian and an Italian mountaineer respectively, the current building dates back to the 1920s, but stands on the ruins of the first lodge, dating from the late 19th century, which was destroyed during the First World War. A great spot to stop on the way back to the Fischleintal Valley or en route to other destinations in the Dolomites, it offers a restaurant with indoor and outdoor tables with panoramic views and around 80 beds: part lodge, part bivouac.

    Talschlusshütte refuge

As its name suggests, the hut is located at the bottom of the Fischleintal Valley, at an altitude of 1,548 m. Its position, below the Einserkofel and Zwölferkofel peaks, makes it the perfect starting point for hikes of various difficulty levels, including the circular hike of the three refuges – Zsigmondyhütte, Pian di Cengia and Dreizinnenhütte – which can be hiked either clockwise or anticlockwise from this point. The Talschlusshütte refuge in the Fischleintal Valley was built as a simple kiosk to provide refreshment for mountaineers in the 1950s, and then developed into the lodge it is today. Its history is also linked to Jannik Sinner's family: the famous tennis player's parents worked here for about 20 years. Its location also makes it a pleasant destination for people who prefer quiet walks, both in summer and winter, following the path through the Fischleintal Valley. Perfect for families with children and pushchairs, its playground and restaurant cater to the needs of even the youngest hikers.

    Büllelejochhütte refuge

The midpoint of the circular hike of the three refuges, the Büllelejochhütte refuge is the highest lodge in the Dolomites, at 2,528 metres above sea level, and is located in the centre of the Sexten Sundial. Its characteristic wood and stone structure, set among the Dolomite rocks, makes it a particularly attractive stop. Built in the 1960s in an area considered strategic during World War I, where foxholes and caverns are still visible, it is also the smallest lodge in the Dolomites. A short via ferrata begins about 10 minutes from the hut: the perfect place to practise while admiring the views. At the lodge, hikers will find a restaurant and 15 beds; reservations are required.

    Dreizinnenhütte refuge

The Dreizinnenhütte refuge  is located at an altitude of 2,450 m above sea level overlooking the Drei Zinnen: so close you can practically reach out and touch them. Built in the 1930s not far from the site of a small, older lodge, later bombed during the First World War, it welcomes hikers with a restaurant, a bar and a chapel. Even when you are sitting at the tables inside, you will not be able to take your eyes off the Drei Zinnen, which mark the border between South Tyrol and Veneto. A short walk from the lodge lie the Piani lakes, which reflect the bucolic landscape. In 2008, the hut took on a second name, and is now named after both Antonio Locatelli, an aviator and mountaineer, and Sepp Innerkofler, a South Tyrolean mountaineer. About 1,000 metres above the Talschlusshütte refuge in the Fischleintal Valley, it marks a stop on the circular hike of the three refuges, but is also connected to other high-altitude routes for more experienced hikers.

Circular hike of the three refuges

The circular hike of the three refuges is a loop that starts in the Fischleintal Valley and connects the Dreizinnenhütte, Zsigmondyhütte and Büllelejochhütte refuges. Accompanied by views of the Sexten Sundial and the north face of the Drei Zinnen, it is a popular panoramic route for people who enjoy challenging hikes. The hike covers about 18 kilometres, and can be walked clockwise or anticlockwise. If you prefer to climb quickly and at a consistent pace, it is best to start at the Dreizinnenhütte hut; otherwise, make the Zsigmondyhütte your first lodge. The midpoint of the route is always the Büllelejochhütte refuge, at 2,500 m. An evocative loop for you to discover little by little, making the most of your breaks at the lodges, or all in one go.

  • Duration: 7–8 hours
  • Elevation gain: 1,200 metres
