At the granary: Hunters and the Hunted – The History of Hunting
The history of hunting dates back to prehistoric times. Hunting methods continued to evolve during ancient times and the Middle Ages, and from 1500 onward, hunting became a privilege reserved for the nobility and, with the development of firearms, a sport for the wealthy. The advancements of the Industrial Revolution brought about social change as well as new regulations on hunting and increased awareness of nature and species conservation. Since the 20th century, ethical concerns regarding the treatment of animals and the protection of endangered species have grown increasingly significant. The exhibition takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the development of hunting methods and techniques from their beginnings to the present day, highlighting the significance of hunting in a social, artistic, and political context.

At the keep tower: The history of the Ahrntal

From Easter to All Saints' Day, there is an exhibition on the history of the Ahrntal Valley on the 6 floors of the keep. Today, the Tauferer Ahrntal is considered one of the most beautiful high valleys in South Tyrol and at the same time has a rich past. The valley was shaped by the powerful Tauferer family, the rich copper mine in Prettau and the Anabaptist movement in the 16th century. The events of the wars also left their mark on the Ahrntal, but the inhabitants successfully withstood the fascist oppression. Recent times have brought the valley not only fame, but also a flourishing economy thanks to the flourishing tourism industry.

1st floor: Early history, 2nd floor: Middle Ages, 3rd floor: The Reformation, 4th floor: Lifeworld of the population, 5th floor: Events of war, 6th floor: Tourism
