As a central figure in Cuban and international contemporary art, René Francisco explores the interactions between art, society and education. His artistic practice took shape in the 1990s – a groundbreaking period for Cuba. On the one hand, this period was marked by a severe economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union, but on the other hand, it was characterised by a remarkable spirit of cultural optimism: thanks to the fledgling Havana Biennial and new forms of exchange between the art scenes of the Global South. The exhibition Cómplice, which extends over all three floors of the Kunsthaus, traces the artist's career over more than four decades. On display are large-format installations, films, drawings, paintings and educational projects.
The exhibition focuses on the theme of complicity – that feeling of deep emotional connection – which has shaped both Francisco's creative work and his social relationships in the areas of education, collaboration, participation, friendship and political engagement.
Accompanying the show, the artist will realise a new participatory project in Merano and organise a music evening with the Sonora Festival, which ties in thematically with the exhibition.
