Philosophical Café introduced and moderated by Camilla Stirati, graduate in philosophy.
According to the ancient Greeks, man is not born free, but rather as a bearer of destiny a fate from which he, whether willing or not, can never escape.
With the decline of the gods and the rise of Christianity, however, the concept of free will emerged: the idea that each individual has the power to choose their thoughts and actions independently. Today, it is difficult for us to question this view of reality, as we would hardly be willing to accept that the outcome of our choices might depend on unfathomable forces. And yet, the concept of freedom continues to be challenged by disciplines as diverse as neuroscience and quantum physics.
There are no definitive answers to this question, but what would it mean, morally and in our daily lives, to imagine that our actions, as well as our thoughts, are determined by forces beyond our control?
The event is open to the public. No specific preparation is required just a willingness to engage, question oneself, and participate with an open mind and without prejudice.
Free admission.
