From the Ibiza affair to the NSA revelations: behind these scandals that came to public attention are people who provided the media with sensitive information. The English term whistleblower refers to people who expose confidential information or wrongdoing and carries a far more positive connotation than terms such as “snitch” or “informer”.

Director and author Calle Fuhr spoke with journalists from Austria and Germany to gain a better understanding of how whistleblowing works. He was also able to establish personal contact with several sources. The resulting psychological thriller is fictional, yet filled with references to real-life cases: methane is leaking from a pipeline in Lower Austria. Cows are dropping dead. The company responsible, Power, remains silent, concerned about its share price. But someone decides to leak the explosive information… What follows is a fast-paced game of cat and mouse between the corporation, committed investigative journalists and a mysterious whistleblower.

Calle Fuhr has already collaborated several times with the investigative journalism platform DOSSIER on productions such as “Die Redaktion” and “Aufstieg und Fall des Herrn René Benko”. “Die Quelle” is their latest successful joint project.
