The String Academy presents works by Bach, Martin and Honegger with Heinz Holliger and violinist Sebastian Bohren

center
This String Academy concert brings together masterpieces for string orchestra from the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, featuring two internationally acclaimed performers.
Oboist and conductor Heinz Holliger performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Oboe d’amore and Orchestra in A major, BWV 1055. The original score has been lost and the work has been reconstructed from Bach’s own harpsichord transcription.
Violinist Sebastian Bohren then performs Frank Martin’s Polyptyque for violin and two small string orchestras. Commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin and Edmond de Stoutz, the work avoids the traditional violin concerto in favour of a sequence of short movements inspired by Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Maestà altarpiece.
The programme concludes with Arthur Honegger’s rarely performed Symphony No. 2 for string orchestra, featuring an evocative ad libitum trumpet part.
Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach
Concerto for Oboe d’amore and Orchestra in A major, BWV 1055
Frank Martin
Polyptyque for violin and two small string orchestras
