RODAS means “wheels” in Romansh. The wheel, capable of turning endlessly, is one of humanity’s most significant inventions. Everything is in constant change, and folk music is no exception.
The old wheels found in the Chanzuns Rumantschas—such as the spinning wheel, cartwheel, and mill wheel—may have come to a standstill, yet the Earth continues to turn in the cosmos, and so does the wheel of time.
The initiator of RODAS, musician Corin Curschellas, is regarded as the grande dame of Romansh song because of her profound exploration of her musical roots through traditional Romansh folk songs preserved both through oral tradition and archival collections. For years, she has delighted audiences with innovative reinterpretations of the rich Romansh musical heritage and has received numerous prestigious awards for her work.
Through the virtuosic arrangements of the outstanding accordionist, flautist, and composer Patricia Draeger, these old songs gain a magical contemporary radiance. Cellist Barbara Gisler, well connected within the Swiss folk music scene (including Fränzlis da Tschlin), enriches the RODAS sound with versatile and imaginative playing. More recently, accomplished violinist Andrea Kirchhofer has expanded RODAS into a quartet, enhancing the ensemble’s sound with expressive solos and dynamic accompaniment.
The four musicians of RODAS form the hub of the wheel. They carry these traditional songs forward and keep them alive. Their folk-song variations are archaic, jazzy, modern, contemporary, and captivating—like a vibrant, ever-turning musical kaleidoscope that moves and inspires us.
The programme includes Romansh folk songs, traditional songs of the Grisons Walser communities, songs from the Italian-speaking valleys of Graubünden, musical settings of Romansh poetry in all its idioms, and songs in the Chur German dialect composed by Curschellas herself. In addition, each of the three instrumentalists contributes beautiful original compositions.
