Lagrime di San Pietro, the polyphonic masterpiece by Orlando di Lasso, will resound beneath the vaults of the Old Parish Church of Gries, a small gem of Bolzano's Gothic architecture, performed by the Swiss vocal ensemble Voces Suaves.
The work is compelling for at least two reasons: first, because a score so deeply steeped in devotion was completed only three weeks before the composer's death in 1594; and above all, because although it may represent the summit of Renaissance polyphony, it arrives at the very end of an era. Within just a few years, the first forms of Baroque music would emerge, with accompanied monody, basso continuo and the concertante style. A work steeped in melancholy and symbolism, composed in 1595.
