Geology enthusiasts can 'go all out' on this GEOexcursion: a GEOPARC guide will accompany you through the entire Bletterbach gorge, from the lower part to the end of the valley at Gorz. There, the valley opens up like an amphitheatre, revealing the three upper geological layers of the Bletterbach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Dolomites, as well as the Permian-Triassic boundary. The transition from the Palaeozoic to the Mesozoic era saw the greatest mass extinction in Earth's history, with over 90 per cent of all oceanic and 70 per cent of all terrestrial species becoming extinct.
The approach to the GEOPARC Bletterbach is from Auer or Neumarkt via Montan to Aldein. In Aldein, about 1 km after the village centre, turn right into the district of Lerch towards Bletterbach and drive to the car park at the visitor centre.
