Quadriga Consort is one of Austria’s most successful ensembles, internationally renowned for its SONY best-selling albums On a Cold Winter’s Day, Crime and Mystery, and Winter’s Delights. When darkness falls over the British Isles, stories that get under your skin have been awakening for centuries: songs of unrequited love, ballads of mysterious figures, eerie murder ballads and lamentations about loss and transience. The Austrian ensemble Quadriga Consort brings these old melodies back to life – with harpsichord, viols, recorders, percussion and vocals. Many of the songs tell of cold nights, stormy winters and survival in a harsh, barren landscape. Well-known folk ballads meet forgotten treasures from Ireland, Scotland and England. In new arrangements by Nikolaus Newerkla, they unfold with a special intensity: archaic, moving, sometimes ghostly – and yet timelessly touching. ‘Darkness Falling’ is a concert evening full of contrasts – between tenderness and power, between Celtic mysticism and baroque elegance.
