A gift. Laura and Giuliana, the daughters of the artist Sergio Agosti, hand over to me seven folders of magnificent handmade paper—too beautiful to keep for myself. The dormant, dreaming legacy of an artist that awakens and begins to speak. A beautiful number, seven. And there are seven of us, united by friendship, closeness, and mutual esteem. An exhibition—more a traveling exhibition—moving between synergies, contrasts, and “NUANCES.”
This is how Paola Fonticoli describes the exhibition “NUANCES,” which, after its debut in Milan, is now on view at the Kunstforum Unterland. The protagonist is paper, interpreted individually by the participating artists. They come from Milan, Trento, Munich, and Salorno and have diverse backgrounds in painting, sculpture, and graphic art. The result is a group exhibition full of facets—precisely “NUANCES”—also reflected in the range of techniques on display: collage, watercolor, acrylic, and oil.
As Chiara Gatti writes in the exhibition leporello: “Paper says a great deal—sometimes even everything—about an artist’s search. It is the place where, as Leonardo claimed, the most immediate rendering of thought manifests itself. It is the place of experiment, intuition, and invention. Giotto, Vasari recounts, ‘never drew from nature, but only what came into his mind.’ Before paper, artists are always sincere and free from the constraint of completeness; they test forms, probe the inner life of the paper, the interaction between line and color. Here the idea is revealed, the X-ray of the entire body of work. Paper does not lie, even if that may make it seem impertinent—too honest to disguise itself, direct to the point of surrender.”
A clear, crystalline exhibition, despite the density of the paper, which here becomes an open and receptive support for the various expressive forms of the individual artists.
