The government is on its last legs, the streets are burning, and behind closed doors the sparkling wine is getting warm – “Putsch” serves up a deliciously biting feast of political satire: Klara is a successful stand-up comedian with her own TV show. But after making a controversial statement, her programme is cancelled and everything begins to unravel. The broadcaster’s decision is publicly perceived as an act of censorship, and almost overnight Klara becomes – rather unwillingly – an icon of free speech, propelled by a wave of solidarity, media frenzy and political calculation.

The right-wing populist UHD party also senses an opportunity in the wave of outrage sweeping across the country and coldly exploits both the situation and Klara herself in its bid for power. What follows is a fast-paced struggle for influence, control of the narrative and survival in the political arena.

Last season, another satire by Dietmar Jacobs, “Kalter weißer Mann”, toured South Tyrol. Together with Alistair Beaton, he has written “Putsch”, a wildly entertaining political thriller that dissects the mechanisms of power and mercilessly demonstrates just how fragile democracy can become when discontent is simmering, integrity is lacking and opportunism takes over.
