Transart26 - Believing in Masks

Romeo Castellucci returns to Transart with Credere alle maschere, a work that had its world premiere at FOG – Performing Arts at Triennale Milano. A wordless, immersive experience that summons an alphabet of images, silences and masks, placing the responsibility of the gaze at its very centre.

An empty, aseptic room. At the entrance, each audience member is handed a mask. To wear it means suspending one's own identity and joining a temporary community of nameless faces. In this shared anonymity, those who watch are in turn watched — in a silence charged with tension. At the centre, a single isolated chair: a mute evocation of violence and power, an object that carries a long history between art and death. The theatrical fiction fractures, and with it the reassuring separation between stage and audience.

Credere alle maschere confirms the radicalism of Romeo Castellucci, a central figure of contemporary European theatre. An experience that removes every refuge, asking those who participate to confront the responsibility of their own gaze. No answers are offered — only stubborn questions remain, directed at those who look.
