The ensemble Anacronìa takes the audience at Castel Mareccio, as part of the Bolzano Festival Bozen, on a journey into the vibrant and refined London music scene of the eighteenth century, when private impresarios began organising subscription concert series in the most prestigious venues in the capital.
One such series, founded by the celebrated soprano Teresa Cornelys, gained extraordinary popularity in the final decades of the century when Johann Christian Bach and Karl Friedrich Abel took it over at the elegant salons of Hannover Square. A present-day listener might be startled by the animated atmosphere that reigned at such events: audiences could shift from laughter to tears in an instant, all while chatting comfortably from their seats. The music, however, was of the highest quality – as the evening's programme makes clear, featuring original compositions by Bach, Abel and their associate Juan Oliver Astorga alongside works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Joseph Haydn.
Programme:
Johann Christian Bach – Flute Quartet in C major, W.B 58 (1776)
Karl Friedrich Abel – Flute Quartet in D major, WK 226 (1770)
Juan Oliver Astorga – Trio for two violins and bass
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – Divertimento in G major, H. 642
Joseph Haydn – Flute Quartet in D major, op. 5, Hob. II:D9 (1767)
