Awen – Gaelic for “inspiration” – is a trio that explores what we call our “roots”: the cultural heritage that resonates within us. What traditions do we carry within us, and how can these origins be made visible through music? Fascinated by the Celtic world, the group turns to old Gaelic songs – work songs, ballads, ritual music – and opens them up to improvisation and new soundscapes.
The result is music that hovers between tradition and freedom, past and present. The trio's common ground lies in Stefano Battaglia's Laboratori Permanenti di Ricerca Musicale at Siena Jazz University, where singer Natalia Rogantini, guitarist Giacomo Zanus, and pianist Stefano Battaglia found each other artistically.
