Igor Levit is one of the most significant pianists of our time and, at least in the German-speaking world, a public figure whose voice extends well beyond the classical music world. Born in Russia and raised in Germany, he is not only an exceptional interpreter but also a prominent presence in public discourse, speaking out on social and political issues and taking a firm stand against antisemitism and right-wing extremism.
Levit has long been a committed advocate for Busoni. Describing himself as a "citizen, European and pianist", he places himself in direct continuity with Busoni's transnational conception of identity and his intellectual legacy. For his Bolzano debut, Levit has adapted his touring programme specifically to place a work by Busoni between two summit works of the piano repertoire: Schubert's Sonata in C minor D 958 and Beethoven's "Appassionata" frame Busoni's Fantasia nach J. S. Bach, BV 253.
Programme:
Franz Schubert – Piano Sonata No. 19 in C minor, D 958
Ferruccio Busoni – Fantasia nach J. S. Bach, BV 253
Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, op. 57 "Appassionata"
