LANA | MUSIC | FESTIVAL 2026 - Christmas Oratorio for Everyone

Lana, Meran/Merano and environs

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in chamber version: music, storytelling and shared chorales in the parish church of Niederlana.

from center

In the parish church of Niederlana, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach accompanies the Christmas season. The project “Christmas Oratorio for Everyone” presents selected parts of Bach’s famous Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 in a chamber music version designed to bring this masterpiece closer to a wider audience.

The performance is presented by Ensemble Rosarum Flores together with the vocal ensemble Juventus Cantat. Instead of the large choir and orchestra normally required for the work, the music is performed in a smaller ensemble setting, making it possible to experience Bach’s oratorio in more intimate spaces.

The idea for this project comes from the internationally active South Tyrolean singer Andrea Oberparleiter. While the opening chorus “Jauchzet, frohlocket” is widely known, the complete Christmas Oratorio is often performed only in large concert venues due to its extensive instrumentation and vocal forces.

This project follows a tradition already common in Bach’s time: adapting works to suit different performance contexts. Through a chamber arrangement, the music becomes accessible to smaller communities while preserving its expressive power.

A special feature of the evening is the participation of the audience. Several chorales from the oratorio – based on well-known church hymns – are sung together. At the beginning of the event, a short introduction explains the work and rehearses two of the chorale melodies with the audience.

The vocal parts are performed by four soloists, who take on both the solo and choral sections. The instrumental ensemble includes two recorders, violin, lute or baroque harp, positive organ and cello, creating a warm and intimate sound.

The result is a musical experience that combines listening, reflection and shared participation. It offers a new way to encounter one of the most beloved works of sacred music.

The performance lasts approximately 75 minutes.
