Launch of the accessible digital cultural trail between Brixen and Neustift

The Interreg project PLACES (‘Promoting Landscape, Accessibility and Culture for Experiential and Sustainable Tourism’) is creating an innovative initiative in Brixen that combines sustainable tourism, cultural education and accessibility. This cross-border project, part of the Interreg Italy–Austria 2021–2027 programme, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aims to make cultural sites accessible to everyone in a contemporary way.

The centrepiece in Brixen is a barrier-free discovery trail between the old town and Neustift Abbey. This route offers a new way to engage with the landscape and the region’s cultural highlights. Visitors are invited to experience the trail mindfully and at a leisurely pace.

Several stops along the route are equipped with QR codes, providing access to digital audio content. This content offers interesting facts about history, culture and local features, brought to life authentically by voices from the region. This creates a modern, multi-sensory experience for locals and visitors alike.

The project is based on the principle of ‘Design for All’ and is deliberately aimed at a broad target group – including families, older people and those with diverse needs. At the same time, the themed trail helps to promote sustainable mobility and the qualitative development of public spaces.

With PLACES, Brixen is sending a strong signal in favour of future-oriented, inclusive and sustainable tourism development.

The project is being implemented by the company Independent from Merano, in collaboration with the municipality of Brixen.
