She is undoubtedly one of the most famous artists of all time: Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). Her paintings address taboo subjects such as miscarriage, childlessness and the deformation of her own body. Her works caused a sensation even at a time when little was known about their autobiographical context.
In “Frida – Viva la Vida”, Swiss author Leopold Huber creates a collage of Frida Kahlo’s diary entries and personal writings, leading us to the most painful moments of her life. Kahlo lived with physical limitations from childhood: polio left her with one leg shorter and weaker than the other. The consequences of a serious bus accident also challenged her strength throughout her life. In her political activism, she showed great enthusiasm for communism and devoted considerable attention to Leon Trotsky during his exile in Mexico. Her relationship with Diego Rivera, Mexico’s equally celebrated painter and twenty years her senior, was intense and turbulent. He became both her companion and her rival. She married him at the age of 22 and, following a period of separation, married him for a second time in 1940.
Director Maria Lisa Huber and actress Vivienne Causemann have created a monologue that celebrates this uncompromising life devoted to art.
