Maldonne
The choreographer behind works for Beyoncé, Zaho de Sagazan and the Chilean National Ballet, Leïla Ka has established herself in just a few years as one of the most original voices in European dance. Maldonne is her first ensemble piece — and the announcement of a major talent at the height of her powers.
Five performers move through forty constantly shifting costumes — evening gowns, wedding dresses, everyday clothes, glittering sequins — in a work that is part celebration, part investigation into what women perform for themselves and for the world. The music ranges from Lara Fabian to Shostakovich, the energy shifts from exuberant to quietly devastating. The piece has been nominated for the International Bloom Prize at Sadler's Wells in London.
Leïla Ka was born in 1991 and came to urban dance at sixteen in Saint-Nazaire, with no formal training. Her first solo Pode Ser (2018) won six international prizes and was performed over 200 times. She is currently associate artist at the national theatres of Cavaillon, Dieppe and Grenoble.
