Museion - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

Founded in 1987, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano (Bozen) now looks back on more than two decades of activity. The new headquarters, designed by the Berlin architects KSV Krüger Schubert Vandreike, opened on May 24, 2008. In correspondence to the new architecture, the “Museion Project” was also redefined: a museum that is not merely a holding tank for art objects, but rather an international art workshop with an interdisciplinary orientation. The collection, which contains works of art from the 1950s through today, bears a stark relationship to the rotating exhibitions. Commissioned works and an artist-in-residence program further stimulate the direct dialog with artists. The cube form of the building offers a stark visual stimulus, with its transparent gables in dialog with the city by connecting the historic town center with the new part of the city. An atelier adjacent to the museum plays host to artists. A particularly evocative sight makes itself available at night: the building façades are transformed into lighted projection spaces with works of art shined upon them.
