The Keschtnriggl chestnut festival
Although sweet chestnuts are called Kastanien in German, in South Tyrolean dialect they are known as “Keschtn”. A Keschtnriggl is a wickerwork container in which roasted chestnuts are shaken to remove their shells. During this chestnut festival the focus will be on the many-faceted importance of the sweet chestnut in traditional rural life. Old recipes will be rediscovered in the villages of Tesimo/Tisens and Foiana/Völlan near Lana in the Merano area, chestnut-based delicacies will be on offer at the farmers’ market and visitors can take part in chestnut trail walks from farmstead to farmstead.
