Merano/Meran and environs

Palms and olive trees in the valley, snow and ice on the surrounding peaks characterise the surroundings of the health resort of Merano, which became a favourite winter resort of the Austrian Empress’s Elisabeth.

Merano/Meran

The town itself and its environs are equally rich in contrasts: architecture typical of the Austro-Hungarian era on one side of the Passiria/Passer River, contemporary design on the other. The town’s surrounding villages nestle among vineyards and orchards and offer countless attractive walks along promenades and irrigation channel pathways called “Waalen”. By contrast the secluded side valleys such as the Val d’Ultimo/Ultental and Val Passiria/Passeiertal are typically Alpine with old, tanned, log-built farmhouses adorning the landscape lending it a uniquely traditional, homely character.
