A walking and family recreation area

The Renonn mountain is famous for its undulating, sunny meadows and woods above Bolzano straddling the 4,000 foot elevation line. The villages of Collalbo/Klobenstein, Soprabolzano/Oberbozen, Longomoso/Lengmoos, Auna di Sotto/Unterinn, Auna di Sopra/Oberinn, Longostagno/Lengstein and Vanga/Wengen are situated at elevations ranging from 2,625 ft/800 m to 4,920 ft/1,500 m.

The Renon/Ritten mountain is a paradise for hedonistic walkers. They are spoilt for choice with 350 km of well-marked walking trails and promenades and superb views of the Dolomites. The 12-minute gondola lift ride from Bolzano to Soprabolzano/Oberbozen is worthwhile alone for the superb views. A quaint narrow track railway built in 1907 connects the villages of Maria Assunta/Maria Himmelfahrt, Soprabolzano, Costalovara/Wolfsgruben, Stella Renon/Lichtenstern and Collalbo. The so-called “earth pyramids” located between Longomoso and Monte di Mezzo/Mittelberg, pointed columns of earth and debris each topped by a protective rock, are a curious natural phenomenon. They can be up to 100 feet tall. The Plattnerhof farmstead at Costalovara is over 600 years old and now accommodates the bee-keeping museum. The view from the mountain’s highest point, the Corno di Renon/Rittner Horn, at 7,415 ft is said to be the finest in all Tyrol. The ski slopes here are enormously popular among families and sun worshipers and there is also an excellent high altitude cross-country ski trail.
