Bolzano/Bozen and environs
The 5,300 year-old Man from the Glacier, dubbed “Ötzi” has found a new home in South Tyrol’s capital, Bolzano. Two cultures and life styles meet and merge in this town with just under 100,000 inhabitants.
The landscape of the surrounding mountainsides - and to the south of the town - is characterized by old wine hamlets and villages nestling amid vineyards watched over by 200 castles, stately country houses and ruins. High plateaux, mountain villages and valleys at altitudes of up to 1,550 m on three sides of the town high provide respite from the heat of the central valleys in summer. The south of South Tyrol is permeated by the aura of the nearby Mediterranean, and the Lake of Caldaro/Kalter See is the warmest bathing lake in the Alps.
