South Tyrol is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the German-speaking part of Europe. Over 20 grape varieties are used in producing top quality red and white wines. The three native grape varieties are Vernatsch, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer.

Of all the wine-growing regions in Italy, South Tyrol has the greatest variety of white wines! Half of all South Tyrolean vineyards now grow white grape varieties, and the numbers are on the rise.

The range of international wine types is broad and includes Pinot blanc (Weißburgunder), Sauvignon, Pinot grigio and Chardonnay. Typical regional wines that are fruity and fresh in character include Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Veltliner and Kerner. These grow at higher altitudes.

In addition, South Tyrol’s vintners have significantly contributed to white wine’s renaissance, in particular through their Gewürztraminer.

South Tyrolean red wine – a time-honoured tradition.

Vernatsch and Lagrein are the two red grape varieties indigenous to South Tyrol. However, for well over a century the region has also been home to other classic varieties, including Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

About 50% of the grapes grown in South Tyrol’s wine country go to making red wine. Vernatsch is the dominant variety. This fresh, fruity red wine is typical of South Tyrol.

South Tyrolean red wines are renowned world-wide. Treat yourself to a glass of fine South Tyrolean red from time to time, or give it as gift for that special someone.

South Tyrol is also home to aromatic dessert wines with a distinctive flavour.

Traditionally, wines from South Tyrolean cultivation are vinified and matured to produce dry wines (without residual sugars).

The zesty Rosenmuskateller (Moscato Rosa) and the aromatic Goldmuskateller (Moscato Giallo) have always been the exception. These rare wines are true South Tyrolean dessert wine classics.

In the past few years, South Tyrolean wine makers have also begun making other types of sweet wines. They now follow French and Italian examples to produce a number of impressive sweet wines.

South Tyrolean Passiti (straw wines) and Spätlese (late harvest) wines made from various white grape varieties are in very high demand.

Sekt from South Tyrol - A delectable treat for anyone who enjoys a good bubbly!

South Tyrolean sparkling wine distinguishes itself through its fresh, tingly and delicate aroma, excels in its pleasantly dry fruitiness and is recognisable by its typical, subtle yeast notes.

Each year, South Tyrol's wine makers hand craft some 200,000 bottles of sparkling wine with loving attention to detail. The Sekt is made using the traditional (champagne) method, where the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle. Select grapes of the following three varieties are used:

• Chardonnay
• Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc)
• Blauburgunder (Pinot noir)

These grape varieties all have the protected geographical status DOC. Strict production guidelines guarantee that the end product is a highest-quality sparkling wine guaranteed to delight lovers of fine wines.
